Interior Design of the 1930's

Alvar Aalto was an architectural genius likened to Frank Llyod Wright. He full name was Hugo Henrik Alver Aalto. he worked in the International style but used a Scandinavian warmth. He related his architecture to the surroundings landscape. Instead of using mathematical calculations, he drew freely by instinct. He made judgments and comments on other international buildings with a well earned arrogance.
This is the Paimio chair or "scroll" chair by Alver Aalto. Alver Aalto believed that people should only come in contact with natural materials.
The Villa Mairea was built as a country house for the architect's friends, Maire and Harry Gullichsen. The house stands in the middle of a pine forest at the top of a hill in western Finland. The house looks out mainly on to continuous unbroken stretches of forest, with a narrow vista through an opening in the trees onto a river and sawmill (which at the time of the house's construction was one of the first industrial enterprises in this part of Finland). Although the inner court is open on one side, the forest creates an effective ?wall' enclosing it. A sauna and swimming pool are located on the opposite side from the large living room on the ground floor.

The Kilismos chair is by T.H Robsjon-Gibbings. His work was inspired by Greek vases. He once was quoted as saying, "The rich are always with us, we should learn to enjoy them".
