Cleaning Codes

Cleaning codes on fabrics were established in the 1960's as a way to rate the methods of cleaning different types of fabrics. There are four main cleaning codes. They are as follows:

Cleaning Code: W
(Water-based cleaners)
Stains should be cleaned with water based cleaning agents such as a mild detergent or a non-solvent upholstery shampoo. Using a damp cloth, make circling motions starting from the outside working towards the center of the soiled area to remove the stain.

Cleaning Code: S
(Solvent or dry cleaners)
Stains should be cleaned with a mild water-free solvent or dry cleaning product. Test the cleaning product in an inconspicuous location for the reason that some cleaning agents may cause discoloration. Make sure to use in a well ventilated room. Avoid products with carbon tetrachloride which is highly toxic.

Cleaning Code: W-S
(Solvent and/or Water-based cleaners)

Both a water-based cleaner and a solvent cleaner can work to remove stains.

Cleaning Code: X
(Vacuum or brush only)
Fabric should be cleaned by vacuuming or brushing only. Using cleaners may cause the fabric to shrink, stains, or it may distort the fabric pile.

These cleaning methods are for spot cleaning only. To prevent soiling, fabric should be vacuumed or brushed lightly. If an overall soiling condition occurs, use a professional furniture cleaning service.
